| A totally noninvasive CT scanning procedure requiring only a few minutes in the scanner without needles or injections. Fasting is not generally required, and no changes in medications are necessary. Patients with pacemakers or other prosthetic devices can safely be scanned. Approximately 75 images of the coronary arteries are obtained allowing for the detection of any calcium that may be present in atherosclerotic plaque. The amount of calcium detected is proportional to the extent of coronary atherosclerosis (plaque). Although calcium deposits do not correspond directly to the percentage of narrowing within the arteries they do correspond to the amount of cholesterol and the risk of future heart disease. A low-risk score suggests a low likelihood of coronary artery disease but is not a guarantee against present or future coronary artery narrowing. High scores do not necessarily mean that you have an immediate problem.Your physician will take into account the results and other risk factors such as age, gender, family history, diabetes, smoking, or high cholesterol levels in determining appropriate treatment including medication, exercise, or further testing. |
